redd.tube born as video downloader platform to download videos from the forum and social network reddit.com.

The original domain was reddit.tube, because we wanted to offer the users the ability to download a video just replacing the .com by .tube on the reddit url.

We made this platform because reddit videos are stored in separate video and audio channels, making difficult to download videos with sound directly from reddit. In 2018 when we started, we didn't find any service that allows you to easily download the video with sound. And we just wanted to share just the video in other platforms or messagings apps easily.

On the process we found that we can merge the audio and video channels to generate a new mp4 file, but that process can take from a few seconds to several minutes to complete in some large videos. And we found that many of the videos are downloaded several times by different users. Because of that, we started storing those videos in our platform to make the downloads faster for the majority of the users that want to download the same video.

Since we were already storing the videos for the downloads, we decided to make them visible to all redd.tube visitors, so they can browse them in our site too providing value to the users of our platform. That transformed our site to a kind of reddit videos archive that also provides more value to reddit users that maybe don't find and old content on reddit, but they can find it in our platform.

In order to keep the service running, we had to add some ads to make the platform sustainable, because the servers cost skyrocketed with the traffic and amount of videos. We try to keep the site with the minimun ads possible, but sometimes is difficult. In special when the traffic drops due some update on google algorithm. It's true if the traffic goes down, the traffic cost also go down, but the storage cost and the web servers remain the same.

The spirit of the platform wasn't changed. We still want to allow user to download and browse the same videos that other users post in reddit. No matter if is a funny, political, adult, or any kind of legal content. From the begining we had the issue that some of the content may be not legal on some countries, so we work hard to keep the site as clean as possible. We remove hundreds of videos on a daily basis for different reasons.
